Twenty Ten Retrospective

Posted in Uncategorized by dagdha on January 21, 2011

It’s January, the Monday of months.  Although I’m a firm opponent of New Year’s resolutions, the beginning of a new calendar cycle is always a good time for reflection and ideation.  Almost a year ago I made a similar post, and now I present the sequel.

The last year has flown by in a whirlwind of work, martial arts training, teaching, and various other misadventures.  Although I don’t feel like much has happened, close reflection of events proves otherwise.  In very rare personal fashion, I have not moved, switched jobs, or otherwise significantly changed my quotidian environment in the last twelve months, so the visual indicators that I typically use to gauge my personal development are somewhat lacking.  Nevertheless, I do feel like I’ve taken large steps towards achieving my goals.

Work, the bane of most people’s existence, has been a great learning experience for me, despite a lack of interest in what I do.  February 1st marks my one year anniversary of employment in the “grown-up” world, and I have a much better understanding of the corporate environment and white collar culture.  I won’t delve into my cynical ideologies that have been reaffirmed by the experience, but I greatly appreciate the perspective it’s given me.  I feel as though I understand my father on a deeper level because of my exposure to an office environment, and I appreciate his sacrifices for me to an even greater degree.  Although I don’t know how long I will be with the same company, there are a lot of exciting opportunities in the near future, and I expect to be there for at least another year.

My martial arts training has only picked up over the last year.  Unfortunately my boxing instructor was injured in a severe collision, and he hasn’t returned to teaching since, but I’m still actively practicing JKD, Savate, Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and Eskrima.  In particular, my Savate training has picked up as I start preparing for the 2012 World Championship in Paris.  I start qualifying this summer, which will hopefully include a trip to France in June.  In addition to my own training, I also teach kid and adult classes five times a week.  Sometimes I daydream about how nice it would be to have free time instead of all these training commitments, but martial arts has fundamentally changed me for the better, and I don’t want to deprive others of the same benefits simply because I want to play more video games.

Work and training/teaching take up most of my time, but here a few other things that happened in 2010:

Started my current job

Experienced my first business trip

Paid off a lot of debt

Bought a Triumph Daytona (my baby)

Got my first speeding ticket (saw that one coming)

Had my eyes carved with lasers

Broke my leg

Quit Facebook

Visited Colorado

Went to Blizzcon

Saw Zion I, one of my favorite artists, in concert for the first time (unbelievable!)

Played/beat Cataclysm and Wings of Liberty

Made more trips to Joshua Tree than ever before

Spent more time at Disneyland than ever before

Served jury duty for the first time

Among many other experiences my lawyers advised not to specify…

Moving forward, my only goal remains the same as it has always been:  Experience as much as possible.  I’m excited to see what next year’s post looks like.
